Diet: Orin dragons are omnivorous, but primarily eat seafood. Tuna is a favorite, as it is plentiful and inexpensive. As Orin dragons are excellent ocean fliers, it is easy for them to dip out of the sea for their meals.
Description: Quick and agile, the bright Orin dragon can be found dipping into the warm coastal waters of eastern Elturas. Orin dragons are distinguishable by their short, narrow wings, the thin membrane crest, and their short forearms. Orin dragons are both a biped and a quadruped, although are generally slow and awkward on land despite what gait they choose to use.
Orin dragons have a mobile “thumb” on each hind foot that helps them use their long toes to grasp onto prey. Their forearms are too short and weak to help them carry off prey.
They have a wedge-shaped head with eyes that are further forward than a Lambrose dragon. Their necks are long and graceful. The body has a large chest that thins towards the hindquarters. The forearms are short and skinny, while the hind legs are thick and powerful. The tail is short and ends in with a thin membrane tail fan used for flight. A membrane crest adorns the head, while a second one continues down the spine right after the wings and ends just after the base of the tail. There is a row of smooth, round, raised scales on either side of the neck and tail.
In Themble, Orin dragons are often hired to scout ahead of boats for schools of fish, or to help spread nets. Orin dragons weigh considerably less than Lambrose dragons and are less likely to be a burden to smaller fishing boats and ships. Their fast speeds mean that they make excellent messengers for lightweight packages or letters.
Sexual Dimorphism: Males have a larger crest, and are more likely to be more colorful.
Colors and Markings: The base of the Orin dragon is gold, silver, copper, brass, or bronze. Gold Orins can vary from white gold to yellow gold to rose gold. These scales are metallic and glint in the sun. No matter the color, Orin dragons have a pale underbelly. Their markings are shades of green, blue, and, rarely, red or orange.
Common Magical Abilities: Orin dragons have few magical abilities, which vary among individuals. Photokinesis and sonar are two common abilities that often appear in Orin dragons.
Physical Abilities: Orin dragons are notable for their speed and agility. Whereas a Lambrose dragon tops out at speeds of 40 mph, an Orin dragon at top flight can reach speeds of 75 mph. At a dive, Orin dragons can fly much faster. Fast flying burns a high amount of calories, so Orin dragons must eat constantly. Orin dragons alternate between flapping and gliding when flying.
Orin dragons are also excellent swimmers, although their large air sacs prevent them from diving for anything more than short periods of time.
With their hindlegs, an Orin can carry up to 850 lbs for a short period of time. For the most part, however, this dragon species cannot carry heavy loads for long periods of time.
Orin dragons are capable of producing white sparks, especially when excited or angry, but they are incapable of breathing fire.
Reproduction: Two to five eggs which hatch after about 30 to 40 days. Eggs are pale blue, and are about a foot tall.
